Trash Bin Art

Storkbilled kingfisher

When I chanced upon a new trash bin on the main bridge, it crossed my mind to have it painted with a nature subject. And what better image indeed should be appropriate for this main bridge at Sungei Buloh Wetlands than the stork-billed kingfisher. This particular bird is often seen here in the mornings and many have been awed by its antics and beautiful plumage. And painting it is that much more meaningful knowing it is a record of its popularity here.

The next session ( also the first for 2012) will be conducted on 26 Feb. 2012. This also marks my 10th anniversary of becoming a volunteer at this reserve.

New participants will benefit from the class exercises before the outdoor session begins.

The session will be held in the workroom from 0830 to 10am , from which students will proceed to the outside areas for their on-site drawing and painting.

Pastel Art In Singapore

Our National Library Board launched this book ” Pastel Art In Singapore” on 25 Nov 2011.

It is hoped that more people will be aware of this traditional medium and its history in Singapore.

Wetlands Art Exhibition

The Buloh Dabblers will be mounting an art exhibition showcasing the biodiversity of this wetland reserve to celebrate 18th anniversary of this wetlands reserve.

Under the guidance of volunteer artist Tham Pui San, the Dabblers have created 25 pieces which will be on show from 10 Dec to 15 January 2012.

Sketching on family vacation

Sharing time with family during vacation is my top priority and if there is any chance to sketch my drawing tools are at hand. Often times I combine the two. Waiting to be served dinner, I would grab the few minutes just to record the restaurant scene. And there’s always the golden opportunity when others are shopping. Waking up early before others give me the quiet time to walk and sketch and when i got back they would just be awake. Nobody would miss out Dad this way. Chiangmai has its special place in my heart as a vacation spot and family. Please enjoy the scenes I sketched last fortnight we were there.

Keeping a Nature Journal

When I take a walk in the local parks and reserve, there is always something of interest that beckons.

A snail crawling ever so slowly along the footpath, perhaps heading for cover; a sprouting weed that appears between cracks of stones, etc.

Seemingly insignificant but full of wonder when I stop to take a closer look. Our winged friends are just too beautiful to ignore.

The next paint along session will be conducted at Paltform#2, 400 m from the Visitor Centre. To get there walk over the main bridge, and then turn right and walk 350 m along Route 1. You will come across platform #1 first, then continue for another 100m.

The river view of Sungei Billabong is quite picturesque.
